Questions pet groomers ask about marketing
Straight answers for grooming business owners on reviews, rebooking, ads, pricing, no-shows, the Google benchmark data and the free 14-day trial.
How many Google reviews does a grooming business need?
Enough to look busier than the two shops listed above you. Across 20,247 grooming listings the median is 38 reviews and 40% sit under 25. The 90th percentile is 175, and that is roughly where map-pack winners live in a real metro. A groomer doing eight dogs a day only needs one review per day to pass most of the field inside a year. The reviews guide has the checkout script.
Should I spend on new clients or on keeping the ones I have?
Keeping them, almost always. A groom is a low ticket, so a $40 lead cost only works if that client returns every six weeks for years. Salons that ask for the next appointment at the counter, before the leash goes back on, book 55% to 75% of clients forward. Salons that ask by text a week later land nearer 20%. Fix rebooking first, then buy growth. The pricing guide covers how cadence changes what you can afford to pay for a client.
Does Google Ads work for a grooming business?
In some markets yes, in some it burns money. Clicks on "dog groomer near me" run $2 to $6 in most metros and a booked new client lands between $18 and $60. That is workable if the client sticks for a year and disastrous if she books once. Run it tight: exact and phrase match, your true drive radius, call tracking on, and paused when you have no chair open. Details in the Google Ads guide.
Do Instagram and TikTok actually bring in bookings?
Transformation clips do. A matted doodle before, a clean trim after, 12 seconds, no music gimmicks. They get shared locally because pet owners tag each other, and the cost per booked client is usually below anything paid. The trap is posting them and never telling anyone how to book. Put a booking link in the bio, say the town out loud in the caption, and pin the three best clips. See the social ads guide.
Mobile van or salon: does the marketing change?
Yes. Mobile sells convenience, anxiety-free one-on-one handling and no crate time, and it wins on searches with a neighborhood name in them. Salon sells price, walk-in nail trims and same-week availability. Mobile also has a harder capacity ceiling, usually five to seven dogs a day including drive time, so mobile marketing should push price and route density, not volume.
How should I handle no-shows and late cancels?
Put the policy in writing before the first appointment, take a card on file, and charge a real fee for a same-day cancel. Most salons use 50% of the groom price. Then send reminders at 48 hours and again the morning of, by text, with a one-tap confirm. Reminder texts alone typically cut no-shows by half, and a chair that sits empty for three hours cannot be refilled.
Why do my listings and my prices never match?
Because grooming prices are breed and coat dependent and most owners refuse to publish a range. Publish one anyway. A range like "Small breeds from $55, doodles from $95, price confirmed at drop-off after we see the coat" filters out shoppers and stops the phone question that eats your day. Groomers who publish ranges report fewer calls and better ones.
How do I show up when someone asks ChatGPT for a groomer?
The answer engines pull from the same signals Google uses plus plain readable text. Complete Google profile, consistent name and address, a website that states in sentences which breeds you groom and which towns you serve, reviews that name specific services, and a few local mentions from vets, rescues or the pet store. Walkthrough in the AI search guide.
What does a missed call really cost a groomer?
More than in most trades, because you cannot answer with a shaking dog on the table. If a caller does not reach you, she calls the next groomer and stays there for years. That is not one lost groom, it is a lost client life. Put your own numbers in the calculator, then read the missed calls guide.
Is the benchmark data trustworthy?
It is public data collected at scale, so treat it as accurate to within a point or two rather than to the decimal. Listings are deduplicated by Google place ID and refreshed monthly. The sample leans toward mobile groomers, so salon owners should read the medians as a floor. Google does not publish any of this itself, which is why we compute it. Method is on the about page.
Where does the benchmark data come from?
Public Google Business Profile listings found through Google Maps searches for pet grooming businesses in every state. We keep only public business fields such as review count, rating, website link and hours. No reviewer names, no personal details, nothing behind a login.
What is included in the free 14-day trial?
Any one of the services we run, or several at once: Google Ads management, Meta and TikTok ads, AI search optimization, local SEO and Google profile work, website design, social media management, review generation, missed-call text-back and follow-up, email and SMS campaigns, bookkeeping, and outbound appointment setting. Setup, management and reporting are included. Ad spend paid to Google or Meta, if you choose to run ads, stays yours.
What happens after the 14 days?
You choose. Keep the service at the monthly price quoted before the trial started, switch to a different one, or stop. Nothing renews on its own and nothing is charged during the trial.
Do I have to put a card down?
No. There is no card on file at any point during the trial. We ask for access to the accounts involved and about 20 minutes for a setup call, usually done between appointments.
